The spindle (1) for a spinning machine, and especially a ring spinner or twister, has a coupling (20) in its drive transmission, to couple the drive unit to the rotor (3) sleeve. Preferably the drive unit is a drive belt (24), and the coupling has at least one carrier (23) ring disc (20), rotating on the stator (2) to be coupled to the rotor (3) without lateral forces. The ring disc can rotate on a carrier sleeve at the stator. The rotor (3) has a circular and cylindrical clamping cap (18) with a slit (19) at the side towards the ring disc (20) to take the carrier (23). The coupling (20) can move up and down axially to the rotor (3). The coupling (20) is permanently or ferro magnetic, and has an electro magnetic coil to mount the stator (2) on the spindle rail (6), with a reversible electro magnetic field, to move the coupling (20) up and down. A brake brings the spindle (1) to rest when the drive coupling has been disengaged. A damper (13) is at the spindle (1) mounting on the spindle rail (6), as a corrugated disc and/or a low viscose grease and/or a rubber elastic material. The roller bearings are rigidly secured to th e stator (2) and rotor (3).
