An aircraft maintenance accountability system (10) and method which includes a plurality of elongate segments of strong, flexible lock wire (20), each of which will be issued to a particular technician. Each segment of wire (20) is cut into a plurality of sections (20') after removal from a spool (30). Each section (20') contains a bar code (25) which identifies the technician.
