The device has a light input gap formed by two light conductors at a distance and an arrangement for emitting a laser beam (25), which is guided along the gap in a scan direction above the fluorescent plate (8) to stimulate image points (19) to emit light. The light conductors have entry surfaces (49) which collect the emitted light. The light conductors have a number of fibres (21,35) and are positioned so that the edge beams (58) emitted from the image points to the sides of the light conductors remote from the entry gap forma an angle (epsilon) w.r.t. the normal to the entry surfaces which is smaller than the acceptance angle of the light conducting fibres. The entry surfaces are inclined to the plate at an angle between 10 and 30 degrees.
