An information distribution system which distributes information including a large amount of data through an open network (103) to many and unspecific clients (102) being in different retaining situations. An information server (101) includes a data production section (105), while the client (102) includes a large capacity data retaining medium (111) and a data retaining medium control section (112). When the information server (101) distributes information through a network (103) to the client, the data production section (105) of the information server (101) provides the data corresponding to the state of the data retaining medium control section (112) of the client (102), whereas the client (102) suitably uses the data existing in its own data retaining medium (111) in utilizing the data from the information server (101). This enables effective data distribution.
