PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a new binaphthyl compound capable of easily providing a salicyl compound which is an intermediate for an optically active salenmanganese complex catalyst when producing an optically active epoxy compound from an olefin compound by a formylation and a demethanation reactions. SOLUTION: This binaphthyl compound is represented by formula I (R<1> and R<2> is H, a halogen, a 1-4C alkyl, a 1-4C alkoxy, nitro or cyano; A<1> to A<5> are each H, a 1-4C alkyl or a 1-4C alkoxy; the binaphthyl part may be a racemic body or an optically active one), e.g. 2-phenyl-2'-methoxy-1,1'- binaphthyl. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a compound of formula II with a corresponding Grignard reagent in the presence of a nickel complex catalyst. |
