PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process of producing a polymer electrolyte free from halogen compounds out of a polystyrene resin. SOLUTION: A polystyrene resin is sulfonated with the polystyrene resin dissolved or dispersed in a solvent comprising a cycloaliphatic compound to modify the polystyrene into a polymer electrolyte. The cycloaliphatic compound includes, for example, cyclohexane and its derivatives with a cycloparaffin preferred. In passing, optionally, after the sulfonation, the used solvent may be recovered to be used for the sulfonation.
