PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a useful product, for example, liquid fuel from org. sludge. SOLUTION: Dry sludge is supplied to a first reactor 16 to be heated in the absence of oxygen to volatile oil forming org. matter in the sludge to generate a gaseous product and char and oil is condensed from this gaseous product by a condenser 20. If non-condensible product exists, water free oil and the product are again injected into a second reactor 24 and char is transferred to the second reactor 24. The heated sludge residue is brought into contact with the oil and/or the non-condensible product in the absence of oxygen within the second reactor 24 to generate a clean product and a high quality oil product, and a gaseous product is removed from the second reactor.
