PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain bisphenols useful as a raw material for polycarbonates, epoxy resins, etc., in high yield and selectivity by carrying out reaction in the coexistence of a mercapto-containing compound when phenols are reacted with ketones in the presence of a specific catalyst. SOLUTION: (C) Phenols such as phenol are reacted with (D) ketones such as acetone in the presence of (A) a catalyst obtained by exchanging a cation M<n+> which exists in intercalation of montmorillonite of layered clay represented by the formula [M is H or a metal atom; 0<(x)<4; (n) is a positive integer; (y) >=0] with a cation of Al, Cr, Fe or Cu and (B) a mercapto-containing compound such as a (cyclo)alkylmercaptane, mercaptocarboxylic acid or hydrogen sulfide. Furthermore, the reaction is preferably carried out by using the component B in an amount corresponding to 0.001-1 based on a molar ratio of the components B/C. |
