The mechanical handler has a chassis (2) carried on front and rear wheels with an engine, a control post (6), a lifting arm (8) that pivots around a transverse axis (9), a tilt corrector (18) and a mechanism to control operation of the arm. A safety system prevents movement that might risk the vehicle tipping about either axis. The inclination of the chassis is measured (28) and compared to a threshold. The forces at the arm are measured (27) and compared to a threshold. The angle of inclination of the lifting arm is measured (29) and also the angle of tilt. These values are applied to a hardwired logic circuit.
