PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lessen the unequal luminance and unequal display of a liquid crystal display device arising from a difference in the effective voltage impressed on a liquid crystal layer, to attain higher-speed response and to avert the degradation in a contrast ratio and the transmittance of a bright display. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display device is constituted by holding a liquid crystal layer 6 provided with a spiral structure having continuously changing angles of inclination of liquid crystal molecules between a pair of substrates 3A and 3B which respectively have striped electrodes 4A, 4B and oriented films 3A, 3B, are provided with color filters 8 of plural colors on one thereof while the substrates are combined to a matrix form by intersecting respective transparent electrodes. The display device is supplied with voltage from the ends of the substrates. The average angles of inclination formed by the liquid crystal molecules constituting the liquid crystal layer 6 at the time of non-impression of the voltage and the boundaries of a pair of the transparent conductive films 5A, 5B are varied within at least one of the substrates and the angles of inclination are changed in the stripe direction of the transparent electrodes. |
