PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to improve the optical characteristics over the entire part of a display panel and to obtain the good optical characteristics in spite of use of a channel substrate which is not severe in the optical characteristics by providing the front surface side of the channel substrate with a polarizer. SOLUTION: This display panel has the linear polarizer 50 between a cover sheet 6 and an electro-optic material layer 10. The polarizer 50 is a sheet of stretched polyvinyl alcohol. The front surface of the polarizer 50 is treated and is thereby provided with an alignment surface. The material layer 10 which is a liquid crystal material layer is adhered onto the alignment layer and an upper substrate 14 provided with data driving electrodes is fixed to the front surface side of the material layer 10. The display panel is provided with the channel substrate 4 and the polarizer 50 downstream of the sheet 6 along the flow of light, by which the optical characteristics of the panel are improved. Namely, the light made incident on the substrate 4 from a light source is non-polarized and, therefore, a change arises in the polarized light at the time of passing the interface between media having different refractive indices. The scattering at the substrate 4 and the interface in ionizable gas does not degrade a contrast ratio. |
