PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To discriminate an original without being affected by 'floating' or &ashasow'. SOLUTION: An original size and whether the original is thick or not are discriminated before prescan operation and based on these results, the effective area of the original is determined. At the time of prescan, a photographic paper original discrimination circuit 11 discriminates whether the original is photographic paper or not from the image data in the effective area. Corresponding to that discriminated result, the filter coefficient of a filter circuit 3 is switched and the color correction coefficient of a color correction circuit 4 is switched.
