A diamond to be ground is heated, while feeding an oxide powder (P) containing at least one member selected from among transition metal elements, alkali metal elements, and alkaline earth metal elements to the surface of the diamond, to a temperature around the phase transformation point of the oxide to grind the surface of the diamond.
