A novel machine making tubular pouches includes units for: sheet transport, shaping, filling, longitudinal sealing, cross seam welding and separation. In the new machine, the welding jaw drive acts transversely to the direction of sheet movement. This includes a moving element (11) carrying a lever (15) pivoted to it. The lever is fixed to a centre of rotation (17). Exploiting the mechanical advantage provided by the lever, the rotary linkage (18, 19) applies an increased force to the welding jaws (7, 8).
