Swashplate driven compressor e.g. for motor-vehicle air-conditioning system

The swashplate compressor has a cylinder block (14) held in a housing (12) and with a number of cylinders spaced around the central axis. Coolant ducts between the top of the housing and coolant access ports (58) in the side of the cylinder block provide coolant flow to the pistons and to the swashplate thrust bearings in the pistons. At least one groove in the inside wall of the housing, or in the outside wall of the cylinder block, between the sump and the access port provides initial lubrication when the compressor is started. The additional lubrication grooves have triangular cross section with a depth of at least 1 mm, a width of at least 2 mm and a spacing of at about 2 mm. The resulting capillary action provides sufficient lubricant for the pistons and swashplate
