The invention provides a low energy process for the production of masterbatches and the masterbatches so produced which is characterized by the steps of mixing additive and carrier while maintaining the temperature between the softening point and the melting point of the carrier until agglomerates of carrier and additive are formed. The additive is any coloring substance or a processing and functional additive for plastics and the carrier is selected from 6 specific classes of materials which are suitable for the process. The masterbatches are free flowing, dust-free and easily dispersible in all polymeric materials.
