The invention concerns an electric toothbrush (1) comprising a handle part (2) and a brush part (3). The handle part (2) houses an electric motor (8) which is coupled to a shaft (20) that projects from the handle part (2). The brush part (3) can be attached to the handle part (2). Mounted on the brush part (3) is a bristle-carrier (26) which can be coupled to the shaft (20) and from which a plurality of bristles (4) protrude. In the switched-on operating state, the bristle-carrier (26) carries out a rotational movement (49) and a lifting movement (50), the frequency of the lifting movement (50) being greater, preferably substantially greater, than the frequency of the rotational movement (49). The lifting movement (50) takes the form of a poking movement of the bristles (4) which releases plaque from the tooth surface, the rotational movement (49) wiping the released plaque away from the tooth surface.
