The display has an upward transforming signal generator which increases a supply voltage according to a pulse signal. A circuit stage outputs a first output signal depending on the upwards transforming signal and a second output signal by inverting the polarity of the upwards transforming signal. An electroluminescent element is connected to the output of the circuit stage. A voltage detector inverts a polarity of the second output signal by taking the first output signal from the circuit stage and producing a control signal for the stage based on a defined voltage of the received first signal.
