PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove powder dust, etc., by bringing a first polishing tape traveling in the forward direction with respect to the traveling direction of a medium at a speed higher than the speed of the medium into sliding contact with the medium, then bringing a second polishing tape traveling backward with respect to the traveling direction of the medium into sliding contact with the medium. SOLUTION: The surface of the magnetic thin film of a continuously traveling raw medium 2 is first brought into sliding contact with the first polishing tape 1 at the time of passing a first polishing means 3. As a result, the powder dust of a relatively large diameter of the powder dust sticking to the surface of the magnetic thin film is rapidly polished and is removed to the traveling direction side of the raw medium 2. The raw medium 2 past the means 3 passes a second polishing means 5. At this time, the surface of the magnetic thin film is brought into sliding contact with the tape 4 and the powder dust of a relatively small diameter which tends to be the cause of a drop-out is removed from the surface of the thin film. At this time, the powder dust of the relatively large diameter which is the cause for flawing is already removed at the time of passing the means 3 and, therefore, the raw medium is polished without the occurrence of scratching flaws and the good magnetic layer surface is obtd. |
