PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the cost and power consumption by processing a signal for controlling the amplitude of an image signal, controlling the storing time of photoelectric conversion and controlling the amplitude of the output signal of a color image pickup element 1 by software to simplify structure. SOLUTION: The color image pickup element 1 outputs multiplexed image information setting luminance information and chrominance information signal obtained from incident light by means of color filter arrays to be the modulated component. A digital image signal from an A/D converter 3 is inputted to an image signal processor 7 with a bi-directional input/output terminal 6 with a synchronizing signal through an interface circuit 4. Then the color image signal of three primary colors are separated and composed from a chrominance information signal to adjust-control its magnitude and white balance. In addition, a signal for controlling the amplitude of the image signal, controlling the storing time of photoelectric conversion and controlling the amplitude of the output signal of the element 1 is generated to control the element 1 and the A/D converter 3 through a timing circuit 5. Then this signal processing is executed by a software to simplify structure to reduce the cost and power consumption.
