In a beta -hemihydrate production process involving partially dehydrating dry finely divided dihydrate in a calcining assembly and then cooling, the calcined material is treated at 40-70 (preferably 50-60) deg C for 10-120 (preferably 30-60) minutes in a steam atmosphere to obtain practically pure beta -hemihydrate.
