A doped sodium * small Greek beta *''-alumina product comprises oxides of titanium and tantalum. A particulate precursor mixture comprising a dopant constituent and a sodium * small Greek beta *''-alumina constituent is formed and heated to a temperature of at least 1200{C. The dopant constituent is a mixture of the oxides respectively of titanium and tantalum and the sodium * small Greek beta *''-alumina constituent is lithium oxide-stabilized sodium * small Greek beta *''-alumina, or a precursor thereof. The oxides respectively of titanium and tantalum are present in specific proportions amounting respectively to 0.3 - 0.5 % by mass of the sodium * small Greek beta *''-alumina and 0.05 - 0.15% by mass of the sodium * small Greek beta *''-alumina.
