The plant holder has a partition (4) insertable in the pot (1) to divide same into an upper chamber (5) for holding the substrate and a lower chamber (6) adjoining the pot base to hold a water supply but to prevent the substrate from entering the lower chamber. A cylindrical or prismatic body (2) projects from the bottom of the lower chamber through the partition into the upper chamber. This body has at least in its surface area a porous section with capillary action which extends up from below and covers at least a part of the circumference. A float (8) in the lower chamber reaches with its upper end (10) the top edge of the pot when the lower chamber is filled with water.
