In order to monitor motor vehicles it is known to integrate into them at least one computer and one position sensing device so that the motor vehicles can be called up cyclically in computer-controlled operational control systems in that information on the last position code to be received and on the distance travelled since then can be provided by means of a radio telegram. The result of this is that although the location of the motor vehicle is detected, protection against theft, in particular in the case of hire cars, is not increased. Therefore, using a code which corresponds to a predetermined number of kilometres as a set value, the said set value is fed to a computer (4) which also receives the data from a comparison with the actual value, transmitted by the position sensing device (5), of the number of kilometres respectively covered. When there is agreement between the set value and actual value the power supply of the motor vehicle is disconnected. The invention is also suitable for use with rental motor cycles.
