PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain benzyl acetate effectively in a high selectivity, useful as a solvent, a medicinal additive, an intermediate for a medicine or an agrochemical, etc., by reacting toluene with acetic acid and oxygen in a liquid phase by using a specific catalyst having a high activity and a long life. SOLUTION: This method for producing benzyl acetate is to react (B) toluene with (C) acetic acid and (D) oxygen in a liquid phase by using a catalyst obtained by loading (A) an alloy consisting of palladium (Pd) and bismuth (Bi), and having 2.5-3.5 atomic ratio of Pd/Bi preferably exhibiting an X-ray diffraction pattern having peaks at 38.5±0.3, 44.8±0.3, 65.4±0.3 and 78.6±0.3 diffraction angles [2θ (degree)] with CuKαrays, and 100, 35±20, 20±10 and 20±10 relative intensities respectively} on a silica. Further, the reaction is preferably performed by adjusting the supplying amount of the component (B) as 0.5-4mols/l based on A=1l and the partial pressure of the component (D) as 0.1-2kg/cm<2> . |
