PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an extra fine steel wire by limiting the number of sulfides of a specific size or below existing in the cross-section perpendicular to the length direction of a high carbon steel wire rod. SOLUTION: In a high carbon steel wire rod of >=0.6wt.% C content, sulfides of <=2μm diameter are finely dispersed by 1×10<4> pieces/mm<2> in the cross-section perpendicular to the length direction of the wire rod, and also the structure after controlled cooling is formed into upper bainitic structure. The sulfides, finely dispersed in the wire rod, are elongated by wire drawing and further finely dispersed. For example, by using a bainitic wire rod excellent in workability and subjecting this wire rod to wire drawing at high reduction of area and then to patenting treatment, a greater grain size refining effect can be obtained.
