PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal composition high in transparency, low in viscosity andτ(respond speed) due to outdoor and high-speed response while satisfying various characteristics required for an STN indication method. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal composition comprises at least two components consisting of a first component composed of one derivative selected from propiol nitrile derivatives and a second component composed of one selected from liquid crystal compounds containing two to four rings containing <=10C saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon groups at both end groups. The propiol nitrile derivative comprises the rings each independently containing one selected from trams-1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene and 1,3-dioxan-2,5-diyl in which each bridge between the rings has mutually independently one selected from ethylene bond, carbonyloxy and a covalent bond and one of the end groups is a <=10C hydrocarbon group which may contain an ether bond in the chain.
