PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To oxidize and remove oxygen-containing organic compd. at low temp. by allowing platinum to exist in a metallic state and allowing calcium and/or magnesium to exist in an ionic state at the time of preparing a platinum catalyst for oxidizing an oxygen-containing org. compd. by depositing platinum and calcium and/or magnesium on a mordenite. SOLUTION: In the catalyst used to oxidize and to remove at low temp. a harmful oxygen-containing org. compd. contained in an automotive exhaust gas, etc., for example, alcoholes, etc., such as methanol, platinum and calcium and/or magnesium are deposited on the mordenite and the platinum is allowed to exist in the metallic state and the calcium and/or the magnesium are allowed to exist in the ionic state. Then the oxygen-containing org. compd. in a mixed gas is oxidized and removed by allowing the oxygen-containing org. compd. to react with the mixed gas containing an arom. carbon and the oxygen ion the presence of the catalyst. At this time, the material of a kind of zeolite and having a one-dimensional core passage consisting of an oxygen two- membered ring as narrow pores is used as the mordenite. |
