PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an excellent latex for coated paper by emulsion-polymerizing a monomer mixture comprising an aliphatic diene monomer, etc., in the presence of an alkylbenzenesulfonate and an alkyl diphenyl ether disulfonate both used under specified conditions. SOLUTION: A mixture comprising 10-80wt.% aliphatic conjugated diene monomer, 0.5-10wt.% ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer, and 10-89.5wt.% other comonomers is emulsion-polymerized in the presence of an emulsifier comprising A pts.wt. alkylbenzenesulfonate and B pts.wt. alkyl dephenyl ether disulfonate both used under the following conditions: 1. 0.3<=A<=2, 2. 0.3<=B<=4; 3. 0.2<=A/B<=4; and at least 80wt.% of B pts.wt. is added to the polymerization system after the polymerization is started to obtain stably a copolymer latex having a particle diameter of 100nm or below. This latex can give coated paper excellent in printing gloss and surface strength.
