PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a percarboxylated polymer effectively by adding hydrogen peroxide to a suspension of a polymer essentially consisting of structural units derived from a monoolefinically unsaturated dicarboxylic anhydride in an inert diluent. SOLUTION: A percarboxylated polymer (B) is prepared by adding hydrogen peroxide to a suspension of a polymer essentially consisting of structural units derived from a monoolefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid anhydride (A) in an inert diluent. A is a cyclic dicarboxylic acid, more particularly maleic, citraconic or glutaconic anhydride which may be substituted with an alkyl or a phenyl. The monoetheylenically comonomer combined therewith is suitably N-vinylpyrrolidone, an N-vinyllactam, N-vinylcaprolactam or the like and also may be an N-vinylamide or a vinyl ester. The source of hydrogen peroxide is advantageously a 30-60wt.% aqueous solution. Product B can be easily isolated from the reaction mixture by filtration or the like and can be used in, e.g. blanching. |
