To give the appearance of wear to the surface of garment fabrics, especially to give jeans a distressed look, an abrasive is projected to the positioned garment at the required zones. The deg. and pattern of the worn zones required by the wearer are set by altering the pressure and the amount of abrasive delivered by the selection of a number of jets, the geometry, the hardness and thickness of the fabric. The shape of the worn pattern can also be effected by a thinning of the fabric in a set zone. Also claimed is an appts. where the garments are delivered for positioning and removed, and a system (2) of jets to project an abrasive at the fabric to give a defined worn zone, with an abrasive feed to the jets (2). A control (7) positions the jets, the vol. of delivered abrasive, the pressure and the shape of one or more of the jets according to the worn shape to be produced.
