A holding device for cutting 10 an ophthalmic lens has: (a) a lens holding member 24 having a spherical sliding surface 30 to which a lens workpiece is fitted, (b) a support member 16 having a spherical receiving surface 20 by which the spherical sliding surface 30 of the lens holding member 24 is supported slidably on the spherical receiving surface, and (c) a fixing means 58, 64, 70, 70 for determining a position of sliding of the lens holding member 24 with respect to the support member 16.
