The bicycle has a freewheel hub. A hold-down (8) can move the freewheel's locking ratchets (16) in and out of contact with a torque input (9). The position of the hold-down is controlled by the direction of revolution of the pedals. There may be a single freewheel between the pedals and a crank (1) which is free in the direction of travel and locks in the braking direction. The crank has a bore (6) with a transmission rod passing through it. This connects freewheel hub and signal freewheel. The signal freewheel star is connected to the pedals via a friction clutch.
