The surface contour comprising concave and convex profiles is prepared for printing by applying a support layer of transparent material over the area to be printed. The support layer is thick enough to fill the contours leaving an even outer surface. The transparent layer is applied by one or more thermal processes and is supplied on a backing sheet.
