The shield comprises several cartridge each enclosed in a pipe (4) covered by an extinguisher and coolant (5). A plastics layer (2), comprising the inner side of the vehicle armour plating (1), reduces the Hopkinson splintering effect and slows down the projectile splinters occurring inside the armour. The ammunition bunker (3) contains a direct shield in the form of a multi-layered plastics housing spaced apart from the plastic coated vehicle armour. The housing has at least one wall (3a) which can be removed when blown into the cavity and contains the plastics enclosed pipe. The pipe is enclosed in a thick or multiple walled protective pipe (6) or held apart by spacer ridges (9).
