The invention relates to metallic nanostructures on the basis of self-assembled, geometrically highly-ordered proteins, and a process for the preparation thereof. Proteins which, during the process of self-assembly, form highly-ordered two or three-dimensional structures such as bacterial cell coat proteins, collagen, actin filaments and tubulin filaments and DNA strands, are therefore considered to be geometrically highly ordered proteins. According to the invention, the assembled proteins are activated with a metal solution and subsequently are subjected to electroless metal-plating in a metallising bath under conditions tolerable for proteins. The proteins can be partially or fully metal plated.
