Cold starting control for internal combustion engine

The engine control system has a control device (6) which arranges to provide controlled amounts of excess fuel during cold starting, without involving the exhaust monitors, but by using the existing idling speed control programme. If the engine temperature is below a set level the idling speed is maintained by increasing the fuel feed. This compensates for any fuel condensation on the walls of the inlet manifold. The system monitors the flow rate of air into the inlet manifold for the idling speed condition. This is compared with stored values of the flow rate at different temperatures. The additional fuel feed rate is stored in relation to the temperature, and is used for subsequent cold start operations.
