Nucleic acid encoding plasma membrane bound steroid or opioid receptor

Isolated nucleic acid (I) encodes a protein component (II) of a plasma membrane-bound receptor (PMBR) having a 52 amino acid (aa) sequence reproduced, or a related sequence derived by substitution, deletion, insertion and/or inversion. Also claimed are: (1) recombinant DNA vector containing (I) and able to express PMBR for a steroid hormone (especially progesterone) and/or an opioid in cultured prokaryotic or eukaryotic cells; (2) transformed cells containing (I) (coupled to a native or other promoter) able to express PMBR; (3) the 52 aa polypeptide (IIa) or its derivatives, a full-length (194 aa) protein (IIb) of which (IIa) is the 2-53 aa fragment, or generally any polypeptide (IIc) derived from (I) and encoding a binding site for a steroid hormone and/or opioid; (4) antibodies (Ab) specific for (IIa), (IIb) or (IIc), and (5) reagents, especially DNA or RNA probes, for detecting expression of PMBR that contain (I).
