A process for the synthesis of butynediol (I) comprises reacting acetylene with an aqueous solution containing formaldehyde, in the presence of a suspended catalyst in a multi-reactor cascade, with solution fed from the first to the second, and so on, and acetylene supplied to each reactor. The amount of catalyst in the solution from each reactor is reduced by 50-99 (preferably 70-97, more preferably 80-95) wt%, before it is fed to the next reactor. A butynediol-rich solution is obtained from the last reactor stage which is separated from the catalyst.
