The steering shaft (1) is supported by axially spaced apart bearing points (3a,3b,3c) in a three-point bearing (3). The middle bearing point (3b) is movably mounted near the inverted end (9) of the inverted pipe (7'). The inverted pipe has a more easily deformable longitudinal part (10) followed by a less easily deformable longitudinal part (11) followed by a more easily deformable longitudinal section (12). The inverted pipe possesses the most resistance to deformation in the longitudinal part (13) of the possible end phase. The longitudinal parts of the pipe may have different thicknesses or the same thicknesses. A ball race (4) is contained in at least one bearing (3c) and moves with the steering shaft.
