The method involves providing a transmission of information from a fixed garage door drive, which is provided with a controller. The drive has a microprocessor with a memory and at least one associated portable extension unit in the form of a hand held transmitter, with a keypad. The information of an access authorisation code, and further function codes, are transmitted by wireless transmission from the controller to the transmitter. Different information for the access authorisation codes are held by the controller. The information transmission is carried out at low frequency from the controller to at least one extension, by transmitting an access authorisation code inductively from the controller to the extension. At the same time the received data is returned to the controller. The different buttons of the hand held transmitter are programmed differently.
