The holder arrangement (25, 26) and a positioning device (27) which arranges the sheets at the front edge (41) are arranged on a common, height-adjustable, carrier (2). The carrier is movable by a motor-driven adjustment device (32, 33, 34, 40). The height adjustment of the carrier is performed according to the determined sheet stack height. The positioning device and the holder arrangement are moved by the adjustment device into a position with respect to the upper side of the sheet stack, corresponding to the respective sheet stack height.
