<p>In the manufacture of steel strip or sheet, suitable for use as deep-drawing steel for the manufacture of can bodies by deep-drawing and ironing, there are performed the steps of (i) providing a low-carbon steel in the form of a slab, (ii) rolling the slab in the austenitic region to reduce its thickness to a transfer thickness, (iii) cooling the rolled slab having the transfer thickness into the ferritic region, (iv) rolling the rolled slab in the ferritic region to a finished thickness. To provide a steel having reduced tendency to 'earing' in can body manufacture, the transfer thickness is less than 1.8 mm and the total thickness reduction in the ferritic region from the transfer thickness to the finished thickness is less than 90 %.</p> |
