The invention relates to a system for varying the gear ratio for a multi-step transmission in which while varying the gear ratio a mass of inertia is accelerated or decelerated. Said mass of inertia, substantially comprising engine components and the converter has, for example, to be accelerated during downshift, whereas it is decelerated during upshift. At least two different strategies which can be selected are provided to alter the gear ratio. The object of the invention is that, first of all, a first value representing the engine output moment, and a second value representing the moment requirement for acceleration or deceleration of the centrifugal mass are determined. To determine the engine output moment during the actual shift, said moment is derived from the current load signal and values dependent on the throttle angle.
