A method and an apparatus for separating solid matter from liquid. The liquid to be purified containing solid matter is led to an apparatus comprising a screw conveyor (4) in an inclined or vertical position for transporting solid matter from down upwards. Liquid is led off from the apparatus so that the discharge point (2) of the liquid is lower than that of the solid matter. Between the discharge point of the liquid and the discharge point of the solid matter there is a separating wall (8), under which liquid flows from the inlet opening (1) to the discharge opening (2) and which holds at least a part of the solid matter. The surface of the liquid to be purified is kept above the lower edge of the separating wall.
