A diazonium salt for a color-forming layer of a thermosensitive recording medium. This diazonium salt has the following formula (1) or (2) <CHEM> wherein R is an alkyl group having two or more carbon atoms such as t-butyl or sec-butyl, and X<-> is selected from the group consisting of hexafluorophosphate ion PF6<->, tetrafluoroborate ion BF4<-> and tetraphenylborate ion (C6H5)4B<->. <CHEM> where R<1> and R<2> are alkyl groups each having one or more carbon atoms, and X<-> is selected from the group consisting of hexafluorophosphate ion PF6<->, tetrafluoroborate ion BF4<-> and tetraphenylborate ion (C6H5)4B<->.
