A method for forming an aluminum cigarette package (10) includes the step of cutting elliptical blanks (42) from an aluminum sheet (40) and shaping the blanks (42) by progressive drawing operations into a lid (14) and a body (12). The lid (14) and body (12) are joined by a flexible label (90) that serves as a hinge that allows the lid (14) to be pivoted relative to the body (12) to open and close the pack. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, a drawn aluminum body (122) is provided with a flat cap member (124) having an aperture (150) and a resealable closure (126). The invention includes a metal package (10,120) made by the method of the invention.
