The present invention relates to an engine (9) comprising a chamber (13), a float (12) reciprocable in the chamber (13), supply means (34) for supplying a liquid to the chamber (13) from a head of liquid, outlet means (35) for receiving liquid from the chamber (13), inlet valve means (11) for controlling the flow of liquid into the chamber (13), outlet valve means (10) for controlling flow of liquid out of the chamber and power output means (78) connected to the float (12) to convert motion of the float to a power output for the engine (9). In use of the engine (9), the inlet (11) and outlet (10) valve means respectively and successively admits liquid into the chamber (13) from the supply means (34) and allows flow of liquid out of the chamber (13) to the outlet means (35) in order to cause the float (12) to reciprocate in the chamber (13). The present invention provides: an improved control mechanism for controlling opening and closing of the inlet (11) and outlet (10) valve means; an improved power output means with a rotatable shaft driven to rotate in one sense only; improved power output means with a hydraulic piston and cylinder arrangement; a method of manufacture and installation of the engine (9); an engine (9) with an integral discharge surge compartment; an engine (9) with removable inlet (11) and outlet (10) valve means; an engine (9) with a linear generator (1000); and an engine with seals of hollow cross section. |
