The road vehicle steering wheel comprises a central padding (2), provided with a horn activator (19), connected to the rim by radial arms. It has a support frame (7) on one side of which is an inflatable air bag (8) with a cover (9). On the other side is a covering shell (10). The air bag cover and the shell are in the shape of two complementary half shells having connecting anchoring zones (11). They form a sub-assembly which is mounted against the action of a spring (18) and displaceable between first and second control positions of the activator. The air bag and the covering shell are fixed on the frame by fixings which allow a determined displacement of the module and the shell relative to the frame.
