The invention provides for a coating formulation (24) and a transfer medium (20) bearing the same which can provide printed images which can be readable by magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) devices. The formulation comprises wax, binder resin, aqueous solvent and an aqueous based ferrofluid comprising magnetic particles in an amount sufficient to render images printed therefrom recognizable by MICR devices.
